During this period, the airmanship and dedication exhibited by Lieutenant Ion in the successful accomplishment of 8 airdrop missions, 1 airlift mission and 2 SAR missions demonstrated his outstanding proficiency and steadfast devotion to duty. The professional ability and outstanding aerial accomplishments of Lieutenant Ion reflect great creditupon himself and the Virtual United States Air Force's 106th Rescue Wing (ANG).

    15 Oct 2008: vFirst Lieutenant Mugur Ion distinguished himself by meritorious service as Mission Pilot, HH-60G, 106th Rescue Wing, 102nd Rescue Squadron, NYANG, Gabreski Airport, NY, during Operation Gustav from Sep 2nd – Sep 5th 2008. vLt Ion was dispatched as flight lead of a two ship rescue element to the vicinity of 8LA1 airport in response to an air disaster involving a Boeing 727. Both Jolly aircraft arrived on scene shortly after and proceeded to conduct a text book rescue of 18 casualties and ferried them out of harms way to an awaiting medical team on shore. After the rescue phase of the operation was complete, vLt Ion’s wingman was tasked to fly three critical patients to KBIX. vLt. Ion assumed chase duties and immediately coordinated with the airborne mission commander for HAAR. After HAAR was conducted and taking advantage of the good weather, vLt Ion requested additional hook ups for currency training. While conducting these hook-ups the pilot of KING30 lost situational awareness and stalled his aircraft causing an immediate flat spin from 1000ft AGL. vLt Ion did not hesitate and immediately positioned himself into a rescue posture, ready to provide rescue services to the crew of KING30. It is also significant to mention that vLt. Ion logged a total of 13.96 hours and rescued 30 survivors, during the operation more than any other line pilot with the 106th Rescue Wing in support of search and rescue operations. vLt. Ion’s leadership, skill, quick thinking during an in-flight emergency and his dedication to accomplish the 106th's mission, reflect great credit upon himself, his unit and the Virtual USAF New York Air National Guard.

    20 Dec 2008: The 106th Rescue Wing, NYANG, distinguished itself by exceptionally outstanding achievement from 1 October 2007 to 1 October 2008. During this period, the 106th Rescue Wing accomplished its mission with a maximum degree of combat readiness. The professionalism, knowledge, and technical skills of the 106th Rescue Wing personnel contributed directly to the fulfillment of Air National Guard objectives.     17 Nov 2009: Per vMg. Gen. C. Berrios: From the period of October 2nd, 2009 to 12th October, 2009, vMaj. Mugur Ion, Commander of the 102nd Rescue Squadron, 106th Recue Wing, ANG, has distinguished himself and his unit with his leadership abilities during Search and Rescue Operation in Samoa Island after an earthquake and tsunami. Maj. Ion flew a total of 6 sorties, starting one within 16 hours of being deployed to and are of operations after flying more than 10 hours he was the sole representative of our club in a in that Area, Rescued 15 people in danger of drowning and located and airdropped life rafts in the Search and rescue for a sinking ship, accumulated over 18 hours of flight time in this one week period. His dedication makes him an asset to his squadron, his wing and the VUSAF as a whole. 2nd Humanitarian award has been authorized by the CoS on this date.
